Coming to the track day bro? Hoosiers BRO! YOKOHAMA! NITTO! track day bro.
I’ma let His Stigness tell some story and show a cool video. Watch the last heat in the last 20 minutes of video. That’s where all of the fun stuff happens and I get to be in the video a bunch:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The track was Streets of Willow run in the CCW direction. Short straightaways and technical corners made it perfect for a Miata and my autocross experience. I was very confused at first what to do at both turns 1 and 7 due to the high speed nature of it, but I eventually got used to diving in under hard braking from the top of fourth gear going ~90 back down to second. I messed it up a lot of times but thankfully we had so much seat time that I was able to improve vastly.
That “so much seat time” is an understatement to me really. I spent more time driving on track in one event than I do in a whole season of autocross!! And for the amount of course working and money I’ve had to spend for all of those events is frightening compared to how excellent this track day worked out. For ~$160 I got 80 minutes of on track driving plus very helpful beginner lectures in between to slowly bring us up to speed on basic concepts like flags, point by passing, and situational awareness.
This being my first track day ever, I took it pretty easy and did not push it too hard. I practiced giving people point bys more than getting my own passing opportunities. Sure I passed the slow as hell true beginners to any sort of motorsport but I was nowhere near fast enough to keep up with the STis nor really get away from the Mustangs. I learned early on to just let them pass and focus on learning the driving line. My improvement from first session to the fourth was monumental. I’m confident I can do an advanced beginner or low intermediate session next time and get absolutely destroyed and lapped many times. But I’m sure I’d grow even more with all of that talent around me.
Either way though for sure I am excited for the next track day. I am truly hooked on the activity and so glad I have my Miata. While the STi would be great on track too, it’s just nice to have such an excellent beater car that is easy on consumables and is purpose built for entertainment. While I love my Subaru too, the Miata is just so much more exciting to drive at 110% and abuse the shit out of.

I think you can add you were happy to let others pass and me be the jackass pushing my car over the limit.
I was the one that suggested the track day in the first place, right? If I did, I’m sorry I’m not sorry! But I am so glad I waited until now to do it because I afford it now. And I totally get why you didn’t want to bring the STI. I waited until now because I didn’t want to have worry about breaking my Mercedes. Now with three other cars at home, I don’t have to.
While I really want to do Fonatana, I want to do Buttonwillow more because that track looks perfect for both of us. Plenty of high-speed sections, but then plenty of technical sections. I loved that about Streets. Yeah, it was hard on my tires, but damn it was fun. I already know how my car handles at its top speed, I want to practice in the twisties.
I also want to get more time racing you. That damn white Mustang screwed things up.

Track day! What’s your suspension set up? Out of curiosity. I’m planning out mine. Prob just gonna start off with swaybars... and go from there when I have money.

Front sway bar is the number one thing worth spending money on. And the rest on lightweight wide wheels and sticky tires. Then after that, you could save up for some coilovers. I’d say skip the cheap sets and wait to get a $1k+ set. I’m running the flyin miata vmaxx coilovers and while I love them, especially for the $600 price point, I’m left wishing for more. Moreso having a more compliant ride but also having even more precision. But it’s not worth it to me to drop more money on coilovers when I’m happy with what I have now. But would I spend another $400 now? No question! So I could have just waited. The other stuff is way more important anyways. If that makes sense.
My setup is FM Vmaxx Classics set to an average height, FM front sway bar set to tightest setting, stock rear sway bar, 200tw summers (star specs), 14lb 15x7 wheels (I could do way better), and a decent alignment. The car understeers at the limit unless I power oversteer. Very close to neutral though.

That’s what I’ve been thinking. Sway bars should eliminate most of the body roll. Why only front sway? Would rear not be as beneficial? I’m new to the set up aspect.
Also I just switched to 15x7s ~10.6lbs (oh the lightness!) and currently running 195s, but want 205s when I can afford it. What tire size you run?
Also as far as ride height: ascetically I’d go lower, but I already have to watch out for scraping (though I guess stiffer springs would combat that).

I have 205x50 for tires. Most people run just the front sway because you get better turn in that way. The aftermarket rear ones are often the same size but just offer some adjustability for further fine-tuning. I’ve been happy with this balance, especially once I got the alignment tight. That shit is voodoo black magic but it definitely makes a difference.

Ok then I guess I’ll get front sway first. Why fm over racing beat? What else did you get to go along with the front sway? Like end links or blocks?
Also did you notice flatter cornering with the sway? Also you like the 205s?

FM vs Racing beat shouldn’t make much of a difference. I believe the racing beat is hollow which is probably lighter than the FM but it also cost a bit more. They should have similar effective stiffness though. I also replaced my end links with a 949 racing set, although I’ve never played with the adjustability there. I only replaced those because the stock ones were unsuable and destroyed. It’s probably of value to do all of the bushings and such but I just skipped over that. It should be on my list some day.
I haven’t really tried other tire sizes. I’ve had rubbing issues even with 205s at my height. I have the coilovers set very high but my fenders aren’t rolled at all. I’d like to do stiffer Springs and rolled fenders and then try to run 225 on a 15x8 with a high offset.

Oh damn. Are your current wheels not offset? Mine +35 and goodwin says 205s will fit with 1.5 negative rear camber or better (which I have).
Also I only have my one car so I will have to be sure I can install the sway bar or I won’t have a car... you think stock end links are usually trashed? I’ll have to start looking in to it and plan for the worst I guess. Also it looks like I may have to remove some things just to get to the sway bar. How was your install??

Yes!
